Stand with us to protect our city's heritage and ensure its future is not compromised by a plan that lacks public support and sound financial judgment.
Watch the Full MeetingThe #SaveFreetown campaign is a grassroots movement led by the Freetown City Council and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr. Our mission is to raise awareness and mobilize citizens to oppose the proposed plan to divide Freetown into two separate cities. We believe that this administrative division will lead to increased bureaucracy, financial waste, and a negative impact on the lives of Freetonians.
Our goal is to ensure that any major decision affecting the future of our capital is made with democratic process and full public consultation.
The new division will divert scarce resources to cover administrative costs of a second council, taking funds away from critical public services.
The city's core challenges are tied to poor coordination with national government bodies. Two councils will only double the fragmentation and confusion.
The East of Freetown, with the largest population, generates only 20% of property rates. Splitting the city will create a financially disadvantaged council unable to deliver services.
Freetown is one historic city with a rich cultural legacy. Dividing it threatens its unique identity and potential for economic growth and tourism.
"The government's proposal to divide the city is a politically driven decision that could create more problems than it solves."
"The consensus from the town hall was clear: Freetown must remain as it is, and government must shift its focus to addressing the real needs of residents."
